INTRODUCTION
The União de Pequenos Agricultores de Santana da Vargem was founded on June 15,
2000 by a group of small farmers of Santana da Vargem - MG. They joined together
to form an association to facilitate the acquisition of credits from the Program
PRONAF.

In 2012, the members of UNIPASV met and decided in assembly to create a
cooperative to facilitate marketing by reducing bureaucratic processes and
increasing export capacity, offering greater possibilities for all members. With
everyone's approval, the Cooperativa dos Pequenos Agricultores de Café of Santana
da Vargem was born and certified with the Fairtrade seal the same year. Today,
COOPASV has 103 cooperative families, producing Arabica coffee at altitudes ranging
from 900 to 1340m.

The vision of the organization is to be a model of cooperativism and reference for
family coffee, promoting the technical and administrative development of the
cooperative and the implementation of certification and verification standards.

COFFEE PRODUCTION
The coffee of the organization grows in a height of between 900 and 1340 meters
and its harvest occurs between the months of May to September. The coffee goes
through the collection process which is done through the family workforce, with
manual and mechanized production and with traceability and social and
environmental awareness.

BENEFITS OF FAIRTRADE
COOPASV believes that Fairtrade certification allows farmers to improve their quality
of life, add value to their products and promote knowledge and environmental
awareness, as well as meeting the needs of small producers, who often do not have
support. Fairtrade can achieve not only financial valuation but human valorization.

QUALITY AND PRODUCTIVITY
The organization has a high focus on technical assistance issues to supervise the
certification and adaptation of the different properties. All this with the aim of
maintaining the quality of their coffee. The Technical Assistance project seeks to
monitor and adapt properties to Fairtrade certification standards and Brazilian
legislation, in addition to assisting and guiding 103 families of producers in the
quality control of their coffees.
ENVIRONMENT
The organization invests part of the Fairtrade Premium in the development of the
Sustainable Energy project, which began in 2018. The installation of solar panels was
made to capture photovoltaic energy, which is distributed at the headquarters of
the organization for the operation of it with clean energy.

OTHER USES OF FAIRTRADE PREMIUM
Part of the support that the organization seeks to give to the community goes with
the objective of generating promotion in the culture and promoting the region, the
Sounds of Coffee Project that exists since 2016 has as main objectives to involve the
children of producers and youth of the community in the learning of a musical
instrument, improving motor coordination and attention to them and helping in a
better social coexistence, the guitar orchestra has the participation of 22 young
people between 13 and 19 years old.
