"Co-operative's name: Aramo (after one of the multiple kebeles it represents)
Location: In the junction of 3 kebeles (Gerbota, Buduqisa and Banko Okoto) and next to the Aramo river, Yirgacheffe District, Gedeo Zone, SNNPR national region
Foundation year: 1976 (joined YCFCU in 2002)
Number of sites: 2, one dedicated to washed coffee and the other, to naturals
Manager: Daniel Mariam
Members: 3877 smallholders, of which 1300 are women
Seasonal staff: 185
Collection by January 2020: 103.000 kg (washed) and 38.000 kg (natural) of red cherry
Rainy season: March to September with a dry month in May. The rains are short in March (inducing flowering) and heavy from July to September. In 2019, the area experienced heavy rains also for the whole of November, delaying harvest.
Andualem Shiferaw, deputy manager of YCFCU, says all coffees produced by Aramo are Yirgacheffe grade 1 due to the co-operative's experience and well-trained workers in charge of depulping.
Older than many local co-operatives, Aramo's quality control manager has been with the team for 12 years, same as the machine operator.

Aramo was one of the kebeles affected by the frost in Gedeo in 2017. All the damaged coffee trees have been stumped, making this their first new production year. Despite this season's heavy rains, Daniel Mariam states that the quality of production hasn't been affected due to the dense vegetation cover.
Due to the small size of the farms in this densely populated district, coffee is the only viable cash crop. Farms are usually in the 3rd generation. The community functions as a base support network. All members join a system called ecub, which consists of group savings. Every week or month they will contribute equal amounts to the ecub fund, which will be used to rescue people in severe distress. The pot can also be used to build houses for the ones in need, for example.

Unlike many washing stations that don't treat their processing waters, Aramo prides itself for keeping its local river, Lakisha, clean."
