The coffee story

Founded in 2016, Coopagro is a new yet promising cooperative. One year after their foundation the co-op was the national winner of Peru’s Cup of Excellence. The following year, they placed third.

The current president is a female coffee farmer, María Elizabeth Vela Guevara.

Coopagro purchases coffee from smallholders in the following districts of Cajamarca: Bellavista, Collasay, Huabal, Jaen, Las Pirias, San Jose Del Alto (Jaén province), Callayuc, La Capilla (Cutervo province), and La Coipa, San Ignacio, San Jose de Lourdes and San Jose Del Alto (San Ignacio province).

Andino is one of the cooperative's regional blends, with coffees separated according to flavour profile and complexity. Grown in the valleys of the North-East of Cajamarca, in farms located at around 1,700 masl.

In general terms, the sensory profile tends to be balanced with notes of spices like vanilla and nutmeg, panela (or unrefined sugar cane), chocolate, caramel and almonds. The acidity is citric and body medium.

Innovative, Coopagro’s team has recently visited Costa Rica to learn about agroforestry systems in coffee farms and shade management. They are also starting to produce honey process lots due to the smaller use and contamination of water.
