The coffee story

Our farm is close to 7 hectares, divided over three smaller lots that are near one another, all located around 1,300 meters. We grow Lempira, Paca, Parainema, IHCAFE 90 and have lots of shadow from native trees like like chilindron, cuajiniquil, liquidambar and robles.

We also have orange trees, which, apart from providing shadow, imbue a zest of citric flavor to the surrounding coffee plants.

The process

A honey coffee is an intermediate between washed and natural coffees. The cherry is de-pulped but the cap of the mucilage is preserved on the parchment. Because it’s called honey, some may be led to think that honey is being used during part of the process or that the coffee has notable hints of honey in its flavor. However, the name derives from the sticky sensation when you touch the bean before it’s dry, just like honey.

We, the 250+ members who together form Cafesmo, have formalized our cooperation in 2016. Our individual fincas are relatively small, most of them ranging from 2 to 12 hectares. All our fincas are FTO certified and we offer an array of specialty profiles. Our region - Ocotepeque - is known for its rich soil and perfect altitude range to grow unique, richly flavored coffees. We are convinced that Mercedes and Ocotepeque will continue to gain in fame over the next few years, and deservedly so. Most of our finca’s are located between 1,200 and 1,600 meters. Thanks to a varied topography, we have a long harvest season, that starts late October and lasts until March. Varieties include Pacas, Lempira, Parainema, Catuaí, Obatá, Colombia, IHCAFE90… We have young people as well as less young members, women and men, someone who is a microbiologist, and one who has been an elementary school teacher. About the grower

I’m a third-generation coffee farmer and although i have an office job now, i keep working on the finca when i can. My father recently passed away, so now my mom and I have a much bigger responsibility for the finca than we had before. I’ve participated in a CAFESMO workshop to learn how to prepare coffee for micro-lots. Now that my father is no longer able to transmit his knowledge, I am looking for other ways to deepen my understanding and expertise. I will be participating in other workshops as my mom and I are determined to continually improve the quality of our beans and offer micro-lots prepared with different processes. We are especially interested in growing long-lasting relationships with small, ambitious roasters from anywhere in the world. When we are partners over a longer period of time, we will be able to slowly fine-tune our lots in accordance with your preferences and, together, prepare coffees that are ideally adapted to the palate of your clients.

Once the ordering period ends we will consolidate all coffees in a shared container. During transport, your coffee is fully insured. We will keep you informed about the shipment status.

Upon arrival of the coffee at the warehouse, you can choose between 2 delivery modes:

  • Doorstep delivery: We will take care of transport to your roastery. We will provide your coffee fully insured until it is ready for unloading from the truck at your roastery.
  • EXW (ex. warehouse) means that we will provide the coffee ready for pick-up at the terminal of the warehouse. You are responsible for organising transport and insurance from the warehouse to your roastery.

Currently, we can deliver coffee anywhere in Europe, except Hungary. For all European buyers, the coffee will be provided custom cleared in any case. Roasters in Switzerland choosing EXW will be responsible for customs clearance.

When calculating price, you can select your preferred currency: USD, CHF, EUR, or GBP.
