My Story: Empowering Papua New Guinea’s Coffee Farmers I grew up in Papua New Guinea, a country with rich, fertile lands that produce some of the finest coffee in the world. However, despite the high quality of our coffee, many smallholder farmers struggle to get fair prices. Middlemen dominate the supply chain, often undervaluing their coffee, leaving farmers with little profit. As a result, many have started abandoning coffee farming in search of better income, and the industry is slowly fading. I want to change that. My vision is to create a direct connection between farmers and international buyers, ensuring that farmers receive fair compensation for their hard work. I want to build a platform where farmers can bring their coffee to me, and I will handle the branding, packaging, and marketing to sell their coffee at competitive prices in the global market. By cutting out unnecessary intermediaries, I aim to increase farmers' earnings and encourage them to continue growing coffee. Currently, I am working with one farmer and using the Coffee Industry Corporation’s (CIC) export license to ship coffee. However, I want to scale this into a full-time business that supports many more farmers across PNG. My goal is to help them improve coffee quality, provide better access to markets, and ultimately revive the country’s coffee industry. Through Algrano, I hope to connect with international buyers who share my passion for ethical sourcing and sustainability. By working together, we can empower PNG’s coffee farmers, preserve the industry, and bring high-quality, farmer-direct coffee to the world.
