Acerca de

Coopetarrazú R.L. was founded on October 13th of 1960 with 228 associates in San Marcos of Tarrazú. The cooperative was born due to the need for better conditions for small producers, since they had a subsistence economy and did not have a voice or vote in the administration and commercialization of coffee. The cooperative was formed with a milling process capacity per year of 4,000 quintal (quintal = 46 Kgs bag), currently, Coopetarrazú R.L. has about 4,500 associates and a processing capacity per year of 300,000 quintal. The Cooperative always ensures the creation of services that help the well-being and development of its associates, their families, and communities. Coopetarrazú R.L. as a social responsibility developed “Casas de la Alegría” project. This project prevents child labor and mitigate risks presented in coffee farms. It is a care center for children from 0-12 years old who came with their parents for harvesting coffee period. The project is supported by the European Union, International Organizations and coffee buyers. Our goal is to increase each year the number of care centers to take care of more children. Coopetarrazú R.L. is compromised with been environmentally friendly, so, have been develop special waste treatment for the residues of the coffee. The water mixed with coffee mucilage is a waste from the milling process, so, the cooperative develops a method to reduce the impact on the environment. The water is transported from the mills through pipes and distributed in an irrigation system in a field planted with the grass called “Estrella”. The grass “Estrella” has a lot of roots that can go 1 meter deep into the soil and has great resistance, that make it ideal for filtering water and depositing it into the ground, returning the water to the natural cycle through evaporation. The coffee pulp is another waste from the milling process. To make it environmentally friendly the coffee pulp is cutter, dry and decomposition until it becomes organic compost. The organic compost is given to the associates for free to fertilize their coffee plantations. In this way we do not create waste, instead add value to a secondary product and return it to the soil in an environmentally friendly way. Coopetarrazú R.L. is always looking for better agricultural practices for their associates to lower the environmental impact. The cooperative has been improving shade management in coffee plantations, incorporation of native species of trees, diversification of the area cultivated, flora and fauna protection, use of bio inputs, creation of microclimate that counteracts the effects of climate change and others.
