The coffee story

This lot comes from Glanmalure Farm, a specialty-focused farm owned by Vera Stucker and part of her larger estate, Ngila Coffee. Glanmalure is based in the Arusha region in Northern Tanzania on the slopes of the Ngorongoro Crater. The farm has grown coffee for around 100 years in an altitude from 1550 m to 1650 masl. They grow traditional varieties like Kent, Bourbons and SL28 and also Batian, Gesha and Pacamara. All coffees are grown under the shade of trees next to 80 hectares of preserved rainforest, going up to more than 1800 m high.

Vera is part of the Ngorongoro Coffee Group, an initiative created by estate owners on Northern Tanzania to promote their coffees. The group, in partnership with the Alliance for Coffee Excellence, is hosting this year a Private Collection Auction, including some gems of Vera's farms.

The 2021 season was another challenge. It rained first heavily in November 2020. Together with rains in the previous season, this has greatly benefited nature. Dry rivers came to life and the freshwater comes bubbling down the mountains even in the now long drought. However, the good situtaion of the coffee trees and the early rains made the the trees bloom in November only. After a first early harvest peak in June 2021, the individual stages of development could be observed well in July/ August. But you could see the main harvest came to end already in September . The picking now lasts 3 months only. the small quantities picked up to now in November are already mixed with the flowering of the new season.

This year, the coffee beans are are again heavy and large! The AA grade are always above  65%! The high scores caress the soul of us coffee farmers. This year we produced our traditional washed Kent as well as some micro-lots (Honey processed coffees, SL28 variety and a small volume of naturals). For the micro-lots, we only chose the coffee beans showing high Brix values.

Agriculture is always a challenge of a special kind. Working with nature and people for such a beautiful product is difficult but also a deeply fulfilling work. We hope you can cup this passion in the coffees we are sending to you! -
Manual cleaning and sorting of coffees at the farm

The process

Grading of the beans by the washing process after having soaked them overnight in the fermentation tanks. This is followed by manual selection before the best coffee beans are taken to the drying beds. Washed coffee beans are naturally sundried by turning the parchment until they have reached a relative humidity of 12%.

Glenmalure is a small specialty coffee farm near Ngila Estate Ltd in Northern Tanzania. We sit on the slopes of the Ngorongoro Crater. The farm has grown coffee for around 100 years in an altitude from 1600 to 1650 masl. We grow traditional varietals like Kent, Bourbons and SL28 and also new ones like Batian, Gesha and Pacamara. Our coffees grow under the shade of native trees and we are keeping about 80 ha of preserved original rainforest next to the plantation, going up to more than 1800 m high. This forest is connected to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and to the Serengeti plains. Our pesticides program based now for more than 5 years on natural measurements. We are using natural insecticides, like Neem extract. We work with compost but also with mineral fertilizers. We do traditional fully washed coffees with a water-saving Colombian eco-pulper. We use only 1 litre of water to pulp 1 ton of cherries. We also do honey processed coffees, naturals and carbonic maceration lot
