The coffee story

This lot comes from Glanmalure Farm, a specialty-focused farm owned by Vera Stucker and part of her larger estate. The lot is prepared by a special sorting process after the coffee is soaked and washed at the factory. Similar coffees to this made it into Cup of Excellence and were being auctioned in the Alliance for Coffee Excellence in February 2021

Glanmalure is based in the Arusha region in Northern Tanzania on the slopes of the Ngorongoro Crater. The farm has grown coffee for around 100 years in an altitude from 1550 m to 1650 masl. They grow traditional varieties like Kent, Bourbons and SL28 and also Batian, Gesha and Pacamara. All coffees are grown under the shade of trees next to 80 hectares of preserved rainforest, going up to more than 1800 m high.

Vera is part of the Ngorongoro Coffee Group, an initiative created by estate owners on Northern Tanzania to promote their coffees. The group, in partnership with the Alliance for Coffee Excellence, hosted in 2020 a Private Collection Auction, including some gems of Vera's farms.

Comments on the 2020 harvest:
The  2020 season was difficult. It rained for months. This has greatly benefited nature. Dry rivers came to life and the freshwater comes bubbling down the mountains even in the now long drought. However, this erratic rain pattern made the trees bloom again and again. After a first early harvest peak in June 2020, the individual stages of development could be observed well in August. You could see the harvest from September to December in your hand. The picking now lasts 6 months and is already mixed with the flowering of the new season.

The coffee beans are extremely heavy and large in the season 2020! The AA grade share is sometimes at 80%! This is a special vintage that we probably won't be seeing very often. The high scores caress the soul of us coffee farmers. This year we produced our traditional washed Kent as well as some micro-lots (Honey processed coffees, SL28 variety and a small volume of naturals). For the micro-lots, we only chose the coffee beans showing high Brix values.

In November 2020, the flowering we saw in February/March 2020 is ripening and we have another harvest boom. Agriculture is always a challenge of a special kind. Working with nature and people for such a beautiful product is difficult but also a deeply fulfilling work. We hope you can cup this passion in the coffees we are sending to you! - Vera Stucker

The process

The coffees are fully washed and than after a soaking time of 12 to 24hours carefully picked by hand before raised on the african beds. Here they will dry slowly under the african sun to the perfect moisture for further conditioning in the store.

Glanmalure is a small specialty coffee farm near Ngila Estate Ltd in Northern Tanzania. We sit on the slopes of the Ngorongoro Crater. The farm has grown coffee for around 100 years in an altitude from 1600 to 1650 masl. We grow traditional varietals like Kent, Bourbons and SL28 and also new ones like Batian, Gesha and Pacamara. Our coffees grow under the shade of native trees and we are keeping about 80 ha of preserved original rainforest next to the plantation, going up to more than 1800 m high. This forest is connected to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and to the Serengeti plains. Our pesticides program based now for more than 5 years on natural measurements. We are using natural insecticides, like Neem extract. We work with compost but also with mineral fertilizers. We do traditional fully washed coffees with a water-saving Colombian eco-pulper. We use only 1 litre of water to pulp 1 ton of cherries. We also do honey processed coffees, naturals and carbonic maceration lot
