The coffee story
Triunfo Verde is a farmer organisation or, as they call it, a “peasant company”. Created in 1999 by a group of smallholders, today they have nearly 450 members, all small coffee producers in Jaltenango, Chiapas, Mexico.
The farms are based in the buffer zone of the El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve. To preserve the natural resources and biodiversity, all farmers adopt organic practices. Producers get access to education on environmental, technical, productive and commercial themes through the organisation, whose goal is generating sustainable development for the community.
FT adopts a democratic decision-making process and promotes gender equality, self-determination of religious creed, and racial non-discrimination. Their commitment to the local community is seen by their investment in social projects, such as the housing improvement programme (making better homes for the most vulnerable members, benefiting 100 families), an internal financing programme with low-interest rates, and a health programme to strengthen the primary health care services received by the community (including cervical cancer screening and treatment campaigns).
