The coffee story

Rianjagi farmers cooperative society has been growing coffee since 1950. Membership consists of 195 female members and 517 male members. The cooperative is located in Embu county the north eastern slopes of Mount Kenya, Ngandori East Location off Mutunduri Manyatta road. The conditions for coffee growing are near perfect, there is abundant rainfall throughout the year, with concentrated wet periods between March-June and October- December. The average daily temperatures range from 100C to 260C with considerable cooling taking place at night. The water used at the station for fermenting and washing the coffee is drawn from the nearby rivers and is re-circulated during processing for conservation purposes. After use, it is moved into soak pits away from water sources so that it does not pollute the area.

The process

The coffee is handpicked from the various small holder farms that constitute its membership. Cherries are delivered to the factory, sorted for quality. Depulping takes place followed by fermentation in tanks overnight and washed then placed on raised drying beds.

"We´ve known about Vava Angwenyi and her work for a few years and was finally able to visit in early 2020. We just love her approach to coffee and her understanding of the larger picture of the impact the industry currently has and the potential for improvement. Vava Specialty Coffee seeks to create sustainable livelihoods for smallholder farmers as well as integrate more women and youth within the entire supply chain, and we are all into that. And also – the coffees we´ve had the pleasure of roasting and introduced are just great!"

Andreas Rød Borge, Nord Brenneri As

"Usually, when people hear of Vava, they think of her impact on the community and coffee industry, but it's worth mentioning that this great work also reflects on all the coffee that comes from Vava. Beautiful, crisp and complex washed lots, this year (2021) we had the opportunity to get a natural processed that still tastes like a typical Kenya but with an added layer of sweetness."
