INTRODUCTION The Cooperativa dos Agricultores Familiares de Poço Fundo e Região -COOPFAM is located in Poço Fundo in the southern state of Minas Gerais. The city of about 17 a thousand habitants, a mountainous landscape dominated by coffee plantations, which is the main activity of the region. The history of Coopfam begins in the 80s when a group of small farmers of Pozo Fundo members of the Pastoral of the Earth organized to give continuity to social work to combat the rural exodus and founded in 1991 the "Association of Small Producers of Pozo Fondo ", with the objective of promoting cooperation in the group and thus improve living and working conditions in the field.
The Association was one of the first organizations in Brazil to obtain Fairtrade certification in 1998 and made its first commercialization of Fairtrade coffees in 2001. As the membership table and its volumes were strengthened and increased, producers perceived the need to make it viable marketing and professionalization of its processes, founding then, in 2003, the Cooperativa dos Agricultores Familiares of Poço Fundo e Região Ltda. Currently, Coopfam has 447 partners located in 20 municipalities of the South Region of Minas. The Cooperative also has organic certification and its mission is to promote the social and economic development of the cooperative family, in the production and marketing of products with quality, performing actions of environmental preservation and interaction with society.
COFFEE PRODUCTION The production of Coopfam is made with 100% of family labour, due to the predominantly mountainous relief, the harvesting process is done manually facilitated by some tools and machinery. The drying process of the coffees is done naturally in order to later carry out the process of storage and processing of the coffees in their own warehouse, the organization also has a medium coffee roasting industry. The organization has a total of 337.52 ha with organic coffee production, 11 hectares are already in conversion from conventional to organic, there are areas that are cultivated by women (currently they are 66 workers), additionally, the production of specialty coffees is developed and SAT coffees, without the use of pesticides.
BENEFITS OF FAIRTRADE
ENVIRONMENT The organization develops with part of the Fairtrade Premium the "Good Water" project which started in 2015, encouraged by the Coopfam and Tchibo association with the aim of improving the health, hygiene and environmental conditions of the producers in the field. In the initial phase, ecological pits were built benefiting 170 producers and their families. In the following stages, water potability analyzes were carried out for 135 families and in 2017 all the members were benefited by the analyzes; Protective activities, spring recovery and installation of filters against water contamination was also carried out for.
SOCIAL The community is one of the pillars of Coopfam, which is why the United for Inclusion Program was created. This project aims to promote and include children and adolescents with special needs in society, defending their rights, as a way of to guarantee respect and equal treatment, according to the particularities of each one. In addition to supporting administrative expenses, Coopfam makes possible the services provided to children and adolescents in the areas of pedagogy, psychology, physiotherapy and occupational therapy, with each individualized attention.
QUALITY AND PRODUCTIVITY The differential of Coopfam was always the production of organic coffees and since its founding the organization encourages producers to stay in the production of organic coffees, increase production areas and promote the adhesion of new producers. In addition, the organization provides support in the finalization fund for the period of transition from crops to organic, in addition to paying for certification and promoting courses, training, field days and participation in fairs for the training of producers.
