INTRODUCTION
The Cooperativa de Cafeicultores do Sul do Estado do Espirito Santo (CAFESUL), was
founded in 1998 and currently has 172 members, mostly family farmers. In 2008 he
achieved the Fairtrade certification in which he attended to environmental and
social conditions.

The mission of the organization is to provide a socially just, economically viable and
environmentally sound coffee that contributes to the economic and social
development of its members, officials and the region.

COFFEE PRODUCTION
The coffee of the organization is produced mostly by family labour, in the postharvest
the drying is carried out in covered terrain or mechanical dryer, and with a small part
of the production, the peeled cherry coffee is made (around 320 sacks) ).

The micro-lots of the annual quality competitions are harvested in covered or
suspended areas with natural drying processes. An average of 200 bags of these
microlote coffees are produced annually. As a result of the work-oriented to the
quality of the coffee one of the members of Cafesul; Luiz Cláudio de Souza, was
awarded in the year 2018 in the International Coffee Week held in Belo Horizonte,
Brazil as the Best Fairtrade Conilon Coffee in Brazil and was awarded the First Place
in the Coffee of the Year Contest in the Canephora Coffee category, with a score of
86 points.

BENEFITS OF FAIRTRADE
The organization considers that the Fairtrade certification has allowed access to
differentiated markets, obtaining better prices for their product, and with the prize
they can unlink and track projects together with the other producers and the
communities where they operate.
ENVIRONMENT

The organization develops the project of Recovery of Water Sources and Soil
Conservation. Between 2016 and 2018, 40 water sources were identified to be
recovered. With the implementation of this initiative, 420 pits were built in the
properties of the associates, which allowed to retain about 9 million litres of
rainwater annually, to increase the availability of water in the springs.

QUALITY AND PRODUCTIVITY
Annually, the organization holds the Conilón variety Coffee Quality Contest, which
has achieved excellent results, with coffees reaching ratings above 80 points. Three
years ago, the Coffee Quality Contest for Women Producers was also promoted,
which was created with the objective of empowering women members and
encouraging the production of high-quality coffees, in addition to diversifying and
increasing family income through training for agroindustry and crafts.
