The coffee story

In operation since the 18th of July 18 of 1961, Cocatrel (Cooperative of Coffee Growers of the Três Pontas Zone), has been consolidating its position as one of the largest cooperatives in the sector in Brazil, bringing together 5.000 rural producers in over 90 municipalities.

With its administrative headquarters, warehouses and main shop in Três Pontas, a city located in southern Minas Gerais, Cocatrel also has branches in the cities of Santana da Vargem, Coqueiral, Nepomuceno, Carmo da Cachoeira, Ilicínea, Córrego do Ouro, Varginha and Santo Antônio do Amparo.

Annually, Cocatrel receives approximately 1.5 million bags of coffee in its warehouses, in bulk, bags and sacks. Cocatrel has a state-of-the-art structure to receive, store, prepare and commercialize these coffees, whether they are specialty or commodity coffees. Our warehouses are qualified to receive coffees with UTZ, Certifica Minas, Global Coffee Platform (4C) and Rainforest Alliance certifications.

For these and many other reasons, Cocatrel stands out as an organization that for over half a century has enjoyed solidity and credibility, generating jobs, income and development for Sul de Minas, in the constant search for the improvement of coffee farming and quality of life for the community and its members.

Collection of empty pesticide vessels
Cocatrel supports the Collection Center for Empty Containers of Agrochemicals, providing information and guidance to its members who have increasingly participated in this project by washing containers correctly and delivering them to the centre nearest their properties.

Reforestation
The cooperative maintains an area of Eucalyptus reforestation with sustainable management for its consumption of firewood.

Effluent Treatment
The effluent treatment is performed in the dairy department, allowing the reuse of water used by the industry.

Sustainability
Other than having a sustainability section in its Monthly Magazine, the main means of communication with its members, Cocatrel, through its technical staff holds lectures and events focusing on social and environmental responsibility and certifications, with relevant guidance to rural producers.

Digital Inclusion
Cocatrel maintains a Digital Inclusion project, with participation in the creation of IT rooms in rural schools.

Coffee School Project
Cocatrel's goal is to disseminate cooperativism and the coffee culture, the main source of income in the south Minas region. That is why the cooperative maintains a project that brings schools and institutions in the region into its structures, such as warehouses, classification and tasting rooms, laboratories, roasting plants and coffee shops, providing relevant information in a playful and participative manner, bringing the cooperative closer to the community and focusing on family succession.

Donations that make a difference
Besides social projects, Cocatrel is concerned with providing financial support to some entities, councils, NGOs, among others, in the region where it operates. Among them, some deserve to be highlighted:

APAE: Cocatrel guarantees the salary of an employee of the Association of Parents and Friends of Exceptional People and always makes donations, whether in cash, inputs or construction materials as well as develops projects with the Association.

São Francisco de Assis Hospital: Cocatrel is aware of the needs that the Três Pontas Hospital and for this reason has the responsibility of donating approximately 1000 litres of milk per month to the entity, in addition to carrying out specific actions such as renovating an entire wing of the hospital, among others.

Vila Vicentina: The elderly at Vila Vicentina need care, attention, affection and donations. The cooperative makes monthly cash donations to the entity and promotes specific actions such as the collection of food, hygiene materials, among others.

Public Safety Council of Três Pontas: The CONSEP (Public Safety Council) is autonomous and aims at the joint creation of ways to act on the problems verified in the field of prevention, crime-fighting in the search for solutions and the establishment of a culture of peace in the municipality. Cocatrel supports the initiative by maintaining the salaries of two permanent employees of this Council.
