Where Mount Elgon in Eastern Uganda is our focal point of research and innovation, our operation in the Rwenzori Mountains in the West is proof of concept. To be certain, our goal is to challenge the status quo across all of Uganda - not only Mount Elgon. With this, the Rwenzori Smallholder Project was born on the “Mountains of the Moon,” as it is famously called.
We began in the Rwenzoris with a discovery phase in 2022, exploring the potential of the region. During these discovery phases, we identify 1) do farmers respond to Mountain Harvest techniques; 2) is there quality potential in the region; and 3) is there potential to build up a team of Ugandan experts within the region. In a short time, the potential was tangible to visitors and Mountain Harvest staff alike. This affirmed our decision to build a larger station in the Rwenzoris at the end of 2023 under the stewardship of Processing Manager, Seth Nduwayo.
Nduwayo’s 2024 season was dedicated to building up a Ugandan team of experts in coffee evaluation and coffee processing while building a supply chain of early adopting farmers. To be certain, they are a team to pay attention to, with national awards already rolling in their first season and 600 smallholder farmers responding to their trainings.
Join us in our efforts to challenge the status quo with this Spacewalk Honey Microlot, a symbol to farmers and the world that quality coffee and innovative impact are possible across Uganda when solutions are being conducted at the source - by the source.
