La historia del café

Coopelibertad: Tradition, Quality and Equity Founded in 1961 in Heredia, Costa Rica, Coopelibertad emerged as a solution to empower small coffee farmers who faced economic and social challenges in an unequal system. With the support of the National Bank of Costa Rica, a group of visionaries joined forces to create a cooperative based on the principles of solidarity, sustainability and justice. Since then, Coopelibertad has worked to guarantee the freedom and development of its producers, providing coffee of the highest quality. Today, our name is synonymous with excellence and commitment, recognized by the main marketing companies in national and international markets.

Due to the aggressive change in land use in this area, from agriculture to urban development and industry. Finca Higuerones was acquired by Coopelibertad in the mid 90's from the Tournon Family with the objective of becoming a sanctuary of coffee growing activity in the Central Valley region of Costa Rica. On the property there are incredible huge Higueron trees with their roots exposed. The neighbors know this place as (el raicero) and the farm used to be called Higuerones because of its trees. Now, this farm hosts a number of programs and projects of interest to the Cooperative. The plantations are certified by standards such as Café Practices, Fair Trade and Rain Forest Alliance; as well as a Costa Rican project called Nama Café that focuses on reducing the environmental impact of coffee cultivation and processing such as greenhouse gases.

Honey coffee is produced under sustainable production standards; it is processed by our own Cooperative.
