Colombia is the third-largest producer of coffee in the world and the largest producer of washed Arabica. Currently, up to 40% of the country’s exports are traded as specialty translating into better prices for growers. Colombia is also a big producer of certified coffees, especially Fairtrade and Organic.
The Northern departments of Santander and Magdalena, however, have only one season, which goes from around October to January.
In the cup, Colombian coffees present chocolatey and caramelly notes with a rich mouthfeel. Washed coffees are overall cleaner, lighter and more acidic than standard Brazilian or Peruvian coffees and historically have been chosen due to higher quality.
Now that every country is diversifying their processing methods, Colombian coffees can contain the entire flavour wheel. Clean and bright, they can be fruity and winey (like an Anaerobic Tabi from the North) or floral and citrusy (like a Washed Castillo from the Coffee Axis).
Algrano has developed a strong network of partners in Colombia during multiple visits of our team to the country. On these trips, we were able to meet like-minded growers and cooperatives focused on quality and also innovation.
Slowly, these partners have become better and better at marketing their coffees through the platform, offering coffees that have proved to be favourites to many roasters and their customers.
Algrano also has partners in Cauca, Tolima, Huila, Santander and Magdalena. The last two departments are based in the North of Colombia, where coffee was first introduced as a commercial crop in the country.
Together, these producers offer a wide variety of coffees from blenders to high-end micro-lots and from chocolatey full-bodied cups to citric and fruity profiles.
