The coffee story

The Candelaria Las Luces community is located in the municipality of El Tumbador in the Department of San Marcos, Guatemala. This community is distinguished by its agricultural culture, the product that is most produced and marketed is coffee, they also produce corn, beans, cassava for their basic food basket. Currently, fruits such as rambutan, macadamia, avocado and mangosteen are grown as an associated crop with coffee. Previously it was a single-owner farm, but over the years the farm was purchased by a group of producers and granted in concession by the State to families affected by floods in the coastal area of Ocos, San Marcos. The farm has historically been producing arabica coffee, the farmers sought the support of FECCEG with the objective of obtaining technical assistance and marketing in 2010, and thus had a new approach in the management of their coffee plantations, arabica and robusta.

The process

The coffee is harvested by hand; the beans are picked and selected by members of each family. For the fermentation process, concrete piles are used and in very few cases wooden crates; the coffee is washed with piped water. The coffee is dried 100% naturally in patios specifically for this activity, areas that are circulated to avoid any type of contamination; the terraces of the houses are also used to dry the coffee. The producers keep a record of production, wet processing, and storage, and then deliver the coffee to the FECCEG warehouses, accompanied by a shipping note and identification of each lot of coffee.
