"Leida spent her childhood on her father’s organic coffee farm. Her father had the passion and pride to sustain his farm organically and believed that when soils and the environment are treated well, the coffee will grow well too.
However, a significant drop of the yield coupled with price crisis and invasive pests, caused her father to abandon coffee production, eventually passing the farm to Leida. She later revived the coffee production tradition but has been unable to revive her father’s organic methods. Her plot is a little bit over 1 hectare and a small invasive matter can have a large impact. The ‘Roya’ (the leaf-rust disease) has been one that has affected her coffee farm for years. To fight it, she has explored various sustainable production options, however, she has been having challenges controlling it entirely with organic fertilizers. The challenge hasn’t meant that she would give up. To date, she continues to produce a small quantity of coffee that she currently has. And she hopes to gradually but surely introduce and implement more sustainable practices on her farm - starting with vermicomposting and natural fertilizers. She graduated from our program in 2018. Soon after graduating, she launched her own baked goods brand “Sé Café” that sells cookies and baked goods made with coffee! She hopes to create alternative income sources to continue fueling her dream."
